The Sandy Sister: Where Mid-Century Meets the Sea

Arriving at The Sandy Sister in Dodges Ferry, the wild Tasmanian winds greeted us, carrying the unmistakable scent of the sea. Perched on a gentle hill, this classic mid-century beach house offered a pocket of calm amidst towering gum trees and blossoming gardens.

Beyond its pastel blue door, we were immediately at ease. The coastal-inspired decor, with views stretching across the ocean and the distant twinkle of Hobart at night, set a beautiful backdrop for our two nights with our friends Claire, Harry, and their little ones.

Sunlight streamed through sliding glass doors, casting a soft glow on the timber walls. The large, laid-back kitchen, with its bifold windows framing the ocean and mountains beyond, became a favourite spot as we prepared meals in its serene setting.

The dining table quickly became the heart of our stay, where we shared fresh oysters and Claire’s carbonara. A generous toy basket provided by our hosts was another thoughtful touch, delighting little Viv.

Past the rich timber walls and a precious display of collected seashells, three cosy bedrooms awaited. Each room radiated mid-century hallmarks, adorned with ocean-themed oil paintings, luxurious linens, and large picture windows framing the swaying gum trees outside.

The Sandy Sister gave everyone a peaceful corner to retreat to, a personal space amidst our shared memories.

Despite the windy weather, the timeless beauty of this house made for an unforgettable stay. We chased bubbles in the ocean-facing courtyard with Viv and ran the outdoor bath at sunset. After the kids went to bed at night, we adults stayed up late, sharing DMs and drinks in the living room.

During our stay in Dodges Ferry, a charming coastal town lined with classic beach houses, we often dreamed of which one we’d love to own. After our time at The Sandy Sister, the decision was easy—this was the one.
