Yarra Valley: Sipping, Savouring, and Celebrating

In need of a little getaway, I found myself craving rolling green hills, swaying vineyards and rustic farmhouses — this desire had the Yarra Valley written all over it. Although our visit was during the icy winter, I felt instantly warm about this place as I arrived. We stayed in the region for 3 nights at one of the beautiful Botanica Editions properties, the Habitat House. Here, our days were spent visiting local wineries, whilst our nights were spent unwinding at our home away home, cosying up by the fire.

Zonzo Estate

On the first day, we stopped by Zonzo Estate. Hidden behind the old railway road where the affectionately known Train Trak winery once operated, sits this family-friendly winery and restaurant. Overlooking the vines and a sea of green hills, Zonzo is surrounded by 45 acres of vines on a 200 acre scenic property, with a farmhouse-style location outside Yarra Glen.

The friendly staff treated us like family, bringing out one authentic Italian dish after another. Zonzo Estate's premier wine collection includes Pinot Noir, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, produced by grapes handpicked from the Estate’s vineyard.

The Farm Yarra Valley

On the second day, we attended the the official launch of The Farm Yarra Valley. Nestled on top of a hill that looks out onto rolling lawns, gardens and vineyards, this brand new premiere event space consists of 100 acres of pristine Victorian farmland. 

Introducing itself to the region, the afternoon was spent touring the property, sampling seasonal canapes made by the head chef and tasting locally produced wines. Red brick walls and antique fixtures define the interior, with the building opening out onto a generous timber verandah, a classical fountain and stately bluestone steps. 

The farm prides itself on strong community ties. With local producers making beer and wine on site and offering a seasonal menu featuring vegetables from the kitchen garden and locally grown produce.

The gardens, vineyards and Oak Walk all provide beautiful backdrops for photos and the absolute ideal location for a rustic themed wedding with a modern twist.

Dominique Portet

Last but not least, a trip to the Yarra Valley wouldn't be complete without a stop over at the Dominique Portet winery. The Portet family boasts ten consecutive generations of wine making that began in Bordeaux in the 18th century. Today, the Portet name is most closely associated with the Yarra Valley, where father and son team Dominique and Ben Portet, respectively ninth and tenth generation winemakers, run a successful family winery.

Specialising in Sauvignon Blanc, Rosé, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon, the cellar door has a French country feel, and the terrace café serves light foods from the winemaker’s table, with great views of the ranges.

Since this was our last day, I had hopes of ending things on a high note — and this visit did not disappoint.
